Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) – Refresher Course
This refresher course is designed for previously trained Marine Mammal Observers to update their knowledge, maintain competency, and renew certification in line with current industry standards.
This refresher course is recommended prior to certificate expiry to ensure continuity of certification and avoid operational gaps.
Eligibility Requirements
This course is strictly limited to Marine Mammal Observers previously trained by Scanning Ocean Sectors (SoS).
To enrol, you must:
- Upload a copy of your previous SoS certificate for verification
- Provide updated personal details for certificate and ID card reissue
Enrolments without valid proof of prior SoS certification will not be accepted.
Course Overview
This course provides updated theoretical training and industry developments, including:
- Advances in MMO-related technologies
- Updates to marine mammal species information and conservation status
- Changes to regional legislation, guidelines, and regulatory expectations
- Evolving best practice in monitoring, mitigation, and reporting
The course ensures that MMOs remain current, compliant, and operationally relevant within a changing regulatory and environmental landscape.
Important: Course Scope
This refresher course is designed to update and reinforce existing knowledge.
It does not replace initial training requirements and is intended for individuals who have previously completed SoS MMO training.
Certification & Validity
Upon successful completion, you will receive:
- A renewed Certificate of Achievement
- An updated MMO Identification Card
All refreshed certifications are:
- Issued with a new date
- Valid for a period of 3 years
Certification is issued to the individual who completes the course and is non-transferable.
Assessment & Standards
All assessments are:
- Automatically graded
- Held to a 100% pass requirement
This ensures continued:
- Professional competency
- Regulatory compliance
- Accuracy in MMO operations
Assessment conditions:
- Each attempt overwrites the previous submission
- Repeated unsuccessful attempts may trigger facilitator review
- Course progression may be reset if required
Correct answers are not provided, as this would compromise certification integrity.

Important Note
Certificates will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
You must ensure:
- All personal details are correct and up to date
- A passport-style photograph is uploaded for your ID card
